Honda Accord

The 2017 Accord was named a 2017 Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and received a best-possible 5-Star Overall Rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration*.

All models of the 2017 Honda Accord are available with the Honda Sensing Suite of advanced driver assistance features, including Road Departure Mitigation, Collision Mitigation Braking, Lane Keeping Assist, Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, and Adaptive Cruise Control. Additionally, all models come standard with a multi-angle rearview camera with dynamic gridlines and hands-free tech, and upper trims are available with the Honda LaneWatch blind spot monitor.

Kia Optima

The 2017 Optima was named a Top Safety Pick by the IIHS, and received a 5-Star Overall Rating from the NHTSA‡ While it's a close call, the Accord edged out the Optima in IIHS tests, winning the + part of the title.

The Optima's driver assistance tech is more limited than the Accord's. Rear parking assist, blind-spot detection, and rear cross-traffic alert are optional on most models and standard on the highest trim. Upper trims are also available with a Surround View Monitor, Autonomous Emergency Braking, Advanced Smart Cruise Control, Forward Collision Warning, and Lane Departure Warning.

Power and Efficiency

Honda Accord

The 2017 Accord has two gasoline engine options and one hybrid. The base engine is a 2.4-liter inline-4 that makes 185 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque, and gets up to 36 MPG*. For a little more power, you can opt for the 3.5-liter V6 engine that makes 278 horsepower and 252 lb-ft of torque, and gets up to 33 MPG*. The four-cylinder option has a continuously variable automatic transmission, while the V6 has a 6-speed automatic.

The Accord Hybrid has a 2.0-liter inline-4 engine combined with an AC synchronous permanent-magnet electric motor, making a net 212 horsepower and getting up to 49 MPG*.

Kia Optima

The Kia Optima has three gas engine options, one hybrid, and one plug-in hybrid. Despite a wider selection of powertrains, the Optima still leaves something to be desired.

The base engine is a 2.4-liter inline-4 makes 185 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque, and gets up to 34 MPG. The most powerful engine is a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 that makes 245 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, and gets up to 31 MPG.

The Optima Hybrid has a 2.0-liter inline-4 combined with a permanent magnet synchronous motor that nets 192 horsepower and gets up to 46 MPG. The Plug-in Hybrid has the same engine, but nets 202 horsepower and gets 40 MPG combined, with a 29-mile electric-only range.
